Papartus (b. 1956, Merindad de Río Ubierna, Burgos) is a contemporary Spanish artist, currently living and working in Madrid. His work is defined by a powerful expressive force, dense materiality, and baroque features, creating a decisive statement of artistic principles.

Papartus’ art is an allegory of life in all its heterogeneity, capturing unstoppable and overwhelming impulses while asserting the artist’s creative freedom beyond market dictates. As Rosa Olivares notes: “The accumulated experience over time and passion for painting is what we can see in Papartus’ works. Fragments of the life and feelings of a painter.”

He has exhibited individually in prominent galleries and cultural spaces in Madrid, Zaragoza, Augsburg, Lugo, Pamplona, Cáceres, Barcelona, Lisbon, Asturias, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Malaga, and Segovia. Collectively, he has participated in Spain’s major art fairs, including Estampa and ARCO from 2000 to 2021.

Papartus has been featured by critics such as Rosa Olivares, Ernesto Castro, Robert C. Morgan, Julio César Abad, Miguel Logroño, and Fernando Castro, among others. His work has appeared on the cover of ABC Cultural and in publications like El Mundo, Lápiz, Exit, and Arte Internacional.

His pieces are included in public and private collections, including the City Council of Pamplona, Caja Rural de Huesca, Caja de Segovia, CEART Madrid, College of Architects of Malaga, Citibank, and Prosegur collections.

Notable recent exhibitions include Crumbs on the Sheets at the College of Architects of Madrid (COAM, 2018) and CEART Madrid (2018), curated by Robert C. Morgan, which showcased 40 pieces reflecting twelve years of work, combining large-format and intimate studio pieces in a unified dialogue.
