ARMA GALLERY - Contemporary Art - Artist - Juan Sotomayor - 01

Juan Sotomayor (Villanueva del Arzobispo, Jaén, 1959) is a Spanish painter renowned for his meticulous exploration of light, color, and perception. Initially pursuing medical studies in Zaragoza, he redirected his focus to painting, holding his first exhibitions in the city. In 1988, he presented his first solo exhibition at the prestigious Palacio de la Lonja. That same year, he moved to Madrid, where he has continued to develop his career with a series of exhibitions both in Spain and abroad.

His work is characterized by a detailed approach that investigates the properties of light and its behavior on the surface. In recent years, Sotomayor has evolved towards pure abstraction, creating works featuring large fields of color divided into virtual stripes or horizontal openings, with vertical lines revealing lighter tones beneath the surface. This approach invites the viewer to explore the unique relationship between light, color, and perception.

Throughout his career, Juan Sotomayor has participated in significant contemporary art fairs, including Art Madrid and Estampa, and his work has been featured in international auctions, such as Segre Subastas in Madrid. These platforms have contributed to the recognition and valuation of his work in the global art market.
